No Guts, No Glory

When trying out a new trend, how do you know if you've taken it too far?  There aren't exactly do's and do nots to this question.  There is, however, a certain degree to which you know you might have just toppled a little too far over the edge. For those of you who tend to stick to the "all-american" clean cut affect, this is not something you will have to worry about.  This is for the folks who tend to disregard any kind of guideline about mixing polka-dots with stripes.

As long as I can remember i've always loved fashion.  Be that as it may, while growing up in a very rural town, no one ever pulled me aside and said, "You don't have to wear Abercrombie & Fitch or GAP to look good!" It wasn't until I made it to college that I stopped putting so much emphasis on my khakis matching my gingham button-down and started spending much more time on clothes themselves.  Without realizing it, I had begun to pull things from my closet that I wanted to wear that day, regardless of if the top matched the bottom or the bag matched the belt.

My case in point being, if you feel like wearing a tank top with a tutu....DO IT!!!  The only negative thing that could come out of this experiment is that you won't get any compliments from strangers.  After all, you might surprise yourself (and others around you) with how much this will build your confidence and inspire more creative ensembles in the future!

High and Tight Ponies

This fall the go-to hairstyle just happens to be one of the easiest things to pull off.  To achieve a version of this sleek off-the-face 'do just follow these simple guidelines.......

1) Tilt your head back so that the nape of your neck hits the base of your shoulders.
2) Collect all of your hair in your fist and, using a Mason Pearson brush smooth everything down from             your forehead back towards your nape.
3) Position the hair in your fist on your head where you'd like it to sit.
4) Wrap a hair tie around it at least two or more times, depending on how polished you want the style to be.
5) Spray it all down with a medium to firm hold hairspray.  Use the spine of a comb to push all remaining frizz down.

Baroque

Baroque :
1. characteristic of a style in art and architecture developed in Europe from the early 17th to mid-18th century, emphasizing dramatic, often strained effect and typified by bold, curving forms, elaborate ornamentation, and overall balance of disparate parts.

Baroque Period
1600-1750

This era is often linked to nobility, in which everything from paintings to clothing were characterized by great drama, rich, deep color and intense light and dark shadows.  Today, these characteristics are brought forward usually with brocade, detailed embroidery or heavy beading.

Alexander McQueen

"The term "Baroque" was initially used with a derogatory meaning, to underline the excesses of its emphasis. In particular, the term was used to describe its eccentric redundancy and noisy abundance of details."

Fad or Trend?

How do you know the difference between a "fad" and a "trend?"  Knowing the difference between the two will either put you on E! News' "Gotta Have It!" instead of  "Make It Stop!"  Trends tend to recycle themselves in different forms throughout the years, while fads appear for a short while feigning popularity, then fade out over time, leaving some of us wondering why we ever tried to pull it off in the first place.

If you look back twenty or thirty years and are able to find one of the latest styles has been revived, that's usually when you can spot a trend, like the peplum dress.

If you notice a new style that you've never seen before and find that only certain cliques are following it with an undoubting enthusiasm, chances are, that look won't make it much farther than that specific group of fans.

Don't forget!
September is coming up in less than a week.
It's the month of the September Issue, Breast Cancer Awareness and the beginning of fall!
So, come Saturday, think of three things that you want to do to get ready for the changing of the seasons.

For example:

1) Change up your haircut.  People are always afraid to cut off their locks because of the cold weather.  But, if you're worried about keeping warm, that's what scarves are for!

2) Darken your make-up instead of your hair.  If you're worried about losing your tan and becoming too pale to pull off certain hair colors, don't.  Let's say, you always go a little darker in the fall so your blond locks won't wash you out.  Instead, keep your beachy blond and deepen your nail polish color or lipstick a bit.  Add a little more eyeliner or fill in your brows for a more desirable appearance that will work on even the palest of skin.

3) Make a difference.  "According to the American Cancer Society more than 212,000 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in the USA in 2006 adding to the 2.3 million women in the USA with a history or breast cancer."  Beginning September 1 - October 31, I will be offering pink hair extensions for $10 a piece to those of you who would like to add a little edge to their style while being a small part of the fight.  All proceeds made will go directly to the Susan G. Koman 3-Day Breast Cancer walk.
